Canadian National Committee News

The Canadian National Committee has adopted a theme entitled: WHERE on Earth, WHERE in Canada in which WHERE stands for Water, Hazards, Energy, Resources and Environment.

Former Canadian astronaut, Roberta Bondar has agreed to be Honorary Patron of IYPE in Canada.

Notice has gone out to Canadian students encouraging them to participate in the IYPE Student Contest.

Canadian IYPE is a co-sponsor of a new Canadian Broadcasting Corporation five-part television series called A Geologic Journey (www.cbc.ca/geologic). The series is showing in September and October and an advertisement for IYPE has been showing twice during each airing of the shows.

A new popular book on the geology of Canada called: Four Billion Years and Counting: Canada’s Geological Heritage is in the development stage. Manuscript are in and are being turned into a narrative. New imagery is being developed and the book will have a feast of fine photography. The book will be in three parts: the first will provide some background on key geological concepts (e.g. rock cycle, plate tectonics, geological time); the second part will be a time-slice treatment of the geology of Canada featuring paleogeographic maps made to look like modern satellite imagery; the third part will deal with the social impact of geology on health and wealth. Publication is scheduled for 2008.

A major fund-raising effort is underway to fund more than twenty different projects. For a look at the TV advertisement, the brochure of projects and other information on Canadian IYPE, please go to: www.IYPECanada.org

The Canadian launch will be in Ottawa on April 22.
